Short-term flow fluctuations in the southern central part of Onagawa Bay were examined using long-term mooring and hydrographic data observed during the period from May 2013 to April 2014. The short-term flow fluctuations were dominant in the periodic bands of 15–27 days and shorter than 10 days. The principal and minor components of these flow fluctuations were respectively along and across the local isobaths, which are almost parallel in the north direction. The northward flow fluctuations along the local isobaths were correlated with the northeastward wind fluctuations in both periodic bands, and these correlations were more evident from fall to winter. On the basis of these results, the northward flows are regarded as wind-induced barotropic coastal jets. On other hand, the eastward flow fluctuations across the local isobaths were related to inflow and outflow via the bay mouth or the Izushima Channel. Inflow and outflow with reverse flow at lower depths formed in summer, but those with vertically uniform flow tended to form in winter. The main summertime inflow and outflow were driven by horizontal gradients in density. These permit us to regard the main summertime inflow and outflow as gravitational circulation. Also, the summertime inflow can be intermittently caused by internal waves.  相似文献

For decades, the scientific community has conducted essential background research and developed appropriate modeling tools in support of an ecosystem-based approach to natural resource management. Resource managers and the public, however, lack a clear roadmap for working with scientists to move beyond the traditional single-species approach. With current management processes so strongly focused on working in a species-by-species framework, there are entrenched cultural and institutional challenges to shifting those processes toward ecosystem-based management. We propose using the integrated ecosystem assessment process to both develop new management ideas for a particular ecosystem, and to help shift public policy processes and perceptions to embrace ecosystem approaches to management.  相似文献

Hydrate-bearing sediment cores were retrieved from recently discovered seepage sites located offshore Sakhalin Island in the Sea of Okhotsk. We obtained samples of natural gas hydrates and dissolved gas in pore water using a headspace gas method for determining their molecular and isotopic compositions. Molecular composition ratios C1/C2+ from all the seepage sites were in the range of 1,500–50,000, while δ13C and δD values of methane ranged from ?66.0 to ?63.2‰ VPDB and ?204.6 to ?196.7‰ VSMOW, respectively. These results indicate that the methane was produced by microbial reduction of CO2. δ13C values of ethane and propane (i.e., ?40.8 to ?27.4‰ VPDB and ?41.3 to ?30.6‰ VPDB, respectively) showed that small amounts of thermogenic gas were mixed with microbial methane. We also analyzed the isotopic difference between hydrate-bound and dissolved gases, and discovered that the magnitude by which the δD hydrate gas was smaller than that of dissolved gas was in the range 4.3–16.6‰, while there were no differences in δ13C values. Based on isotopic fractionation of guest gas during the formation of gas hydrate, we conclude that the current gas in the pore water is the source of the gas hydrate at the VNIIOkeangeologia and Giselle Flare sites, but not the source of the gas hydrate at the Hieroglyph and KOPRI sites.  相似文献

Bacterial productivity (BP) and respiration (BR) were examined in relation to primary productivity (PP) for the first time in a shallow tropical ecosystem (Cochin Estuary), India. The degree of dependence of BP (6.3–199.7 μg C L−1 d−1) and BR (6.6–430.4 μg C L−1 d−1) on PP (2.1–608.0 μg C L−1 d−1) was found to be extremely weak. The BP/PP (0.05–8.5) and PP/BR (0.02–7.9) ratios widely varied in the estuary depending on the season and location. There was a seasonal shift in net pelagic production from autotrophy to heterotrophy due to terrestrial organic matter input through rivers which enhanced the bacterial heterotrophic activity and very high pCO2 (106–6001 μatm) levels. The heterotrophic zones were characterized by low PP but high bacterial production and respiration leading to oxygen undersaturation and exceptionally high pCO2. We propose that the CO2 supersaturation caused by increased bacterial respiration (in excess of PP) was a result of bacterial degradation of allochthonous organic matter. This indicates that sources other than planktonic compartment need to be explored to understand the C-cycling in this estuary. These results are of particular relevance to tropical ecosystems in general, where the bulk of world's river discharges occur.  相似文献

Abstract   The Isabela ophiolite shows a complete ophiolite sequence exposed along the eastern coast of northern Luzon, the Philippines. It forms the Cretaceous basement complex for the northeastern Luzon block. This ophiolite is located at the northern end of a trail of ophiolites and ophiolitic bodies along the eastern margin of the Philippine Mobile Belt. This paper presents new findings regarding the nature and characteristics of the Isabela ophiolite. Peridotites from the Isabela ophiolite are relatively fresh and are composed of spinel lherzolites, clinopyroxene-rich harzburgites, depleted harzburgites and dunites. The modal composition, especially the pyroxene content, defines a northward depletion trend from fertile lherzolite to clinopyroxene-rich harzburgites and more refractory harzburgites. Variation in modal composition is accompanied by petrographic textural variations. The chromium number of spinel, an indicator of the degree of partial melting, concurs with petrographic observations. Furthermore, the Isabela ophiolite peridotites are similar in spinel and olivine major-element geochemistry and clinopyroxene rare earth-element composition to abyssal peridotites from modern mid-oceanic ridges. Petrological and mineral compositions suggest that the Isabela ophiolite is a transitional ophiolite subtype, with the fertile lherzolites representing lower sections of the mantle column that are usually absent in most ophiolitic massifs. The occurrence of the fertile peridotite presents a rare opportunity to document the lower sections of the ophiolitic mantle. The variability in composition of the peridotites in one continuous mantle section may also represent a good analogy of the melting column in the present-day mid-oceanic ridges.  相似文献

Abstract Thailand comprises two continental blocks: Sibumasu and Indochina. The clastic rocks of the Triassic Mae Sariang Group are distributed in the Mae Hong Son–Mae Sariang area, north‐west Thailand, which corresponds to the central part of Sibumasu. The clastic rocks yield abundant detrital chromian spinels, indicating a source of ultramafic/mafic rocks. The chemistry of the detrital chromian spinels suggests that they were derived from three different rock types: ocean‐floor peridotite, chromitite and intraplate basalt, and that ophiolitic rocks were exposed in the area, where there are no outcrops of them at present. Exposition of an ophiolitic complex denotes a suture zone or other tectonic boundary. The discovery of chromian spinels suggests that the Gondwana–Tethys divide is located along the Mae Yuam Fault zone. Both paleontological and tectonic aspects support this conclusion.  相似文献

It has been suggested by Biermann that in rotating stars the electron partial pressure could generate a toroidal magnetic field of a considerable strength. However, Mestel and Roxburgh have shown recently that the generation of such a toroidal magnetic field could almost completely be suppressed when a weak primodial poloidal magnetic field exists in the star. In this paper it is shown that a toroidal magnetic field of a moderate strength could be generated even in the presence of a primodial poloidal magnetic field, if the effect of radiation pressure is taken into consideration. This considered mechanism is effective for moderately massive stars, and numerical estimate indicates that in A type stars a toroidal magnetic field of the order of a thousand gauss can be generated near the surface within the time scale of the evolution of the star.Visiting Scientist to the High Altitude Observatory on leave of absence from the Department of Astronomy, University of Tokyo, Japan.  相似文献

Dunite, harzburgite and chromitite of alpine-type ultramaficcomplexes emplaced in the Paleozoic sediments in the Sangun—Yamaguchizone, western Japan, are massive and almost lacking in layeredstructure. Constituent minerals are more or less deformed andequilibrated at a relatively low temperature, about 700 °Cor lower. Chromian spinels in ultramafic rocks from dunite—harzburgite—chromititecomplexes in the Sangun—Yamaguchi zone are characterizedby the uniformity of the Cr/Cr + Al ratio, around 0.5, regardlessof locality and rock type, which is in contrast to the widevariation of the ratio of chromian spinel from the ordinaryalpine-type dunite—harzburgite complex. Mg/Mg + Fe" ratioof chromian spinel, on the other hand, is variable in parallelto the volume per cent of chromian spinel in ultramafic rocks.Olivine in ultramafic rocks is uniform in chemical composition,from Fo88 to Fo92, except for that in chromitite, of which itis Fo95 to Fo97. Primary chemical compositions (especially the Mg/Mg + Fe" ratio)of the constituent minerals have been modified to some extentby element redistribution at low temperature (700 °C orlower), the degree of modification depending on the volume ratioof the minerals. For example, the Mg/Mg + Fe" ratio of chromianspinel in peridotitic rocks has been lowered substantially,and inversely, that of olivine in chromitite has been raised.Primary Mg/Mg + Fe" ratios of olivine and chromian spinel canbe estimated, assuming a certain value of high temperature,e.g. 1200 °C, and the partition coefficient between olivineand chromian spinel at that temperature. As a result, the Mg/Mg+ Fe" ratio of olivine (0.88 to 0.92), and that of chromianspinel (0.78 to 0.80) were uniform, irrespective of rock typeand locality, at the high-temperature stage. Dunite—harzburgite—chromitite complexes in the Sangun—Yamaguchizone were accumulated as refractory residue after the relativelylarge-scaled partial fusion of some primordial peridotites,which resulted in the chemical uniformity of the residual minerals.They may have initially constituted the lowest part of an ophioliticsuite as ultramafic tectonite and been emplaced as dismemberedportions after the disruption of the parent body.  相似文献

The Alyavdin equation for batch grinding data is:

where P(χ,t) is the weight fraction less than size χ after grinding time t, c (χ) is constant with t and p is a constant close to one. It is shown that this equation is illogical (except for a single size of feed) unless c (χ) varies with P(χ,0), which makes the equation of little utility. A new empirical equation is developed for finite size intervals:

which reduces to the Alyavdin equation for a single size of feed, and which gives consistent computations for any feed size distribution. Techniques are given for determining Ki, γ values from sets of batch grinding data. The values are then used to predict size distributions for other times and other feed size distributions. The equation was quite successful in predicting size distributions in batch milling: (a) providing the feed size distribution was not un-natural, that is, not truncated or (b) if a truncated feed was used, the values of Ki and γ are determined from size distributions of grinding of the same type of feed. Thus, Ki, γ are not, unfortunately, completely independent of the starting feed size distribution.  相似文献
